Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. The goal of rhinoplasty is to shape the nose such that it looks natural and blends harmoniously with the rest of your facial structures. If you have been wondering how a good nose job might change your personality you should schedule a consultation with a qualified cosmetic surgeon. Rhinoplasty is customized for individual patient, depending on his or her need. Before making the decision about having a rhinoplasty, you can ask your surgeon for any additional facial procedure that may enhance the effect of rhinoplasty. Some patients prefer to have chin or cheek surgery to balance their facial features. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury, or help relieve some breathing problems. Rhinoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon.
The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you’re physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.
Age may also be a consideration. Dr. Goyal refers to wait to operate on teenagers until after they've completed their growth spurt, around 14 or 15 for girls, and slightly later for boys. It's also important to consider teenagers' social and emotional adjustment, and to make sure it's what they really want.

You can opt for a rhinoplasty if

  • Your nose is small, depressed or too large for your face.
  • You have bump on your nose.
  • Your nose is too wide when viewed from front.
  • The nasal tip is thickened, enlarged or droops.
  • Your nose is deviated or crooked.
  • Your nostrils are flared.
  • You have breathing problem.

Rhinoplasty can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes-to correct birth defects or breathing problems.

The Procedure:

Rhinoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. It usually take 1-3 hours , although a complicated procedure may take longer. Rhinoplasty is usually done from within the nose. Incisions are placed inside the nose. Sometimes a very small incision is made across the collumella (vertical strip in the centre of your nose that separates your nostrils).During the surgery the nasal skin and supportive framework (bone and cartilages) are sculpted to the desired shape. Finally, the skin is redraped over the new framework.
The incisions are either invisible or barely visible on close inspection.

After surgery

After the surgery is completed, a pack inside your nose and a plaster cast outside your nose is placed to protect the modified structures during initial recovery period. There will be some swelling and bluish discoloration around your nose and eyes, which will settle down 1-2 weeks time. You can be back to work in a week time. You will be given specific instructions to follow during your recovery: How to care the surgical site, medications to take including oral medicines and nasal drops aid healing, and when to follow up with your plastic surgeon.

Result

In the days following rhinoplasty, your face will be bruised and swollen. You may feel you look worse than before your surgery, and some patients may feel depressed for awhile after plastic surgery but this is quite normal and understandable. You start noticing improvement in 1-2 weeks which keep on improving as the days pass. Within a week or two, you'll no longer look as if you've just had surgery, and you'll begin to see how your final rhinoplasty results will appear. Still, healing is a slow and gradual process. Some subtle swelling may be present for months, especially in the tip of the nose. You should expect to wait up to six months or one year to see the final result.
When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. Nevertheless, there is always a possibility of complications, including infection, nosebleed, or a reaction to the anesthesia. You can reduce your risks by closely following your surgeon’s instructions both before and after surgery.
